Type IV hypersensitivity reaction to a temporary tattoo.

A 6-year-old boy developed a skin eruption 10 days after application of a temporary tattoo advertised as a "natural black henna tattoo." The eruption was a delayed hypersensitivity reaction to the tattoo ink. The textile dye paraphenylenediamine (PPD) is a common industrial allergen and can be found in some temporary tattoo inks. This case describes the reaction and reviews the international li...

Hypersensitivity: T Lymphocyte-mediated (Type IV)

Five types of hypersensitivity reactions have been described: types I, II, III and V depend on the interaction of antigen with antibody and have been termed immediate; type IV depends on the interaction of antigen with T lymphocytes and has been called delayed-type hypersensitivity, or DTH. The DTH reaction involves cellular activation of T-helper cells (CD4+) and/or cytotoxic T cells (CD8+ CTL...

Cyclooxygense-1 inhibition delays hypersensitivity to nerve injury

Despite the important role of both cyclooxygenase (COX) isoforms (i.e. COX-1 and COX-2) in maintenance of hypersensitivity following peripheral nerve injury, their role in the development of neuropathic pain is not clear. The present study was undertaken to determine the effect of COX inhibitors to address the potential role of COX isozymes in the development of neuropathic pain in rats after c...

Delayed-type hypersensitivity to amide local anesthetics.

We present a 54-year-old woman who suffered eczematous eruptions on her face after the administration of lidocaine and mepivacaine for dental surgeries. Patch tests showed delayed-type-hypersensitivity to the amide local anesthetics lidocaine and mepivacaine with cross reaction to other amynoacylderivatives (prilocaine, bupivacaine) but not articaine.
